Updated: Sep 14, 2020
In a mood to have some chocolate? Then go for these cute little roundels made of chocolate and topped with nuts, seeds and dry fruits. Try it once and I promise you it will be added in your favourite desserts list forever.
Mendiants are a traditional Christmas dessert of France, which was traditionally made using almond, hazelnut, raisin & fig to represent 4 mendicant or monastic orders. But they became so famous, now a days they are available year-round and the toppings options are endless including nuts, seeds, dry fruits, fruit peels, sea salt, candy crush etc. you can play with the shapes too like square, heart, oval etc.
Now what is so good about these.... everything is good, but let me tell you few things to fall in love with it.
The main ingredient is chocolate (that's enough reason for me) and the chocolate options are also many. It can be dark, milk, white, coloured any chocolate of your choice.
Toppings .... go with your liking and creativity. choice is endless again.
No need to cook or bake.
Good activity to engage kids (even adults who are chocoholic).
Really good option to gift someone something homemade, delicious & healthy.
They taste amazing.
Most special thing about these cuties are ... it takes 15 to 20 mins only to make .
Interested? So what are you waiting for. lets make some Mendiants.
French Chocolate Mendiants
Prep time: 10 minutes
Assembling time: 10 mins
Total time: 20 minutes
yields: 25 pieces
Chocolate - 250 gm of your choice (I have used bitter-sweet chocolate)
Nuts - Any nuts of your choice ( I have used Almonds, Cashew, Pistachio)
Dry fruits - Any dry fruits of your choice(I have used black & golden Raisins, dates, apricots)
Seeds - Any seed of your choice or can skip it too (I have used Sunflower seed & pumpkin seed)
Desiccated coconut (optional)
Keep all the ingredients ready. Nuts, seeds, dry fruits and chocolate. you can use the toppings whole or chopped.
Place parchment paper on any tray or board.
Chop the chocolate into small pieces. Keep 50 gm chocolate separately. Put rest of the chocolate in a heat proof bowl.
Melt the chocolate in a double boiler or in microwave. If using microwave check after every 30 second to avoid chocolate to burn.
Once melted take the chocolate and stir it mixing the rest 50 gm chocolate with it.
When it is little cool (around 30 degree Celsius) heat it again for few second so that you can work with it easily. This is called tempering the chocolate. (If you are new to chocolate making and find it difficult to understand as a beginner then I will suggest you skip the tempering process and just melt all the chocolate and work with it. It will taste same only the shine of tempered chocolate won't be there).
Once you are ready with your chocolate take a spoon and start making some small rounds (5 - 6 at a time) on the parchment paper. Don't put all the disc at a time as if it become hard toppings won't be set properly.
Now put the toppings of your choice immediately and press gently so that it set properly.
Once you are done with all the chocolate let it set for 20 - 30 minutes on the kitchen counter or in the fridge.
Once set take the discs out from the paper and store in an airtight container.
Tadaa.... your chocolate mendiants are ready to enjoy.
